Para pencinta coklat boleh bergembira karena hasil penelitian terkini mengindikasikan menikmati batangan coklat susu akan meningkatkan fungsi otak.

"Coklat mengandung banyak unsur yang menjadi stimulant antara lain theobromine, phenethylamine, dan kaffeine," kata Bryan Raudenbush dari Universitas Wheeling Jesuit di West Virginia mengatakan pendapatnya kepada pers.

Peningkatan daya ingat baik verbal dan visual juga terjadi di kelompok yang mengkonsumsi jenis coklat lainnya namun hasilnya berada dibawah kelompok pertama.

Dari penelitian sebelumnya telah diketahui beberapa nutrisi dalam makanan tambahan melepas glukose yang menambah aliran darah yang dapat berpengaruh bagi kemampuan kognitif.

Hasil penemuan terkini mendukung pendapat sebelumnya bahkan memperjelas bahwa mengkonsumsi coklat dapat meningkatkan kinerja daya kerja otak.

If there is any one component that is absolutely vital to the operation of a computer, it is the power supply. Without it, a computer is just an inert box full of plastic and metal. The power supply converts the alternating current (AC) line from your home to the direct current (DC) needed by the personal computer. In this article, we'll learn how PC power supplies work and what the wattage ratings mean.

In a personal computer (PC), the power supply is the metal box usually found in a corner of the case. The power supply is visible from the back of many systems because it contains the power-cord receptacle and the cooling fan.

Power supplies, often referred to as "switching power supplies", use switcher technology to convert the AC input to lower DC voltages. The typical voltages supplied are:

3.3 volts
5 volts
12 volts

The 3.3- and 5-volts are typically used by digital circuits, while the 12-volt is used to run motors in disk driveswatts. A watt is the product of the voltage in volts and the current in amperes or amps. If you have been around PCs for many years, you probably remember that the original PCs had large red toggle switches that had a good bit of heft to them. Switcher Technology

Prior to 1980 or so, power supplies tended to be heavy and bulky. They used large, heavy transformers and huge capacitors (some as large as soda cans) to convert line voltage at 120 volts and 60 hertz into 5 volts and 12 volts DC.

The switching power supplies used today are much smaller and lighter. They convert the 60-Hertz (Hz, or cycles per second) current to a much higher frequency, meaning more cycles per second. This conversion enables a small, lightweight transformer in the power supply to do the actual

voltage step-down from 110 volts (or 220 in certain countries) to the voltage needed by the particular computer component. The higher-frequency AC current provided by a switcher supply is also easier to rectify and filter compared to the original 60-Hz AC line voltage, reducing the variances in voltage for the sensitive electronic components in the computer.

A switcher power supply draws only the power it needs from the AC line. The typical voltages and current provided by a power supply are shown on the label on a power supply.

Switcher technology is also used to make AC from DC, as found in many of the automobile power inverters used to run AC appliances in an automobile and in uninterruptible power supplies. Switcher technology in automotive power inverters changes the direct current from the auto battery into alternating current. The transformer uses alternating current to make the transformer in the inverter step the voltage up to that of household appliances (120 VAC).

Power Supply Standardization

Over time, there have been at least six different standard power supplies for personal computers. Recently, the industry has settled on using ATX-based power supplies. ATX is an industry specification that means the power supply has the physical characteristics to fit a standard ATX case and the electrical characteristics to work with an ATX motherboard.

PC power-supply cables use standardized, keyed connectors that make it difficult to connect the wrong ones. Also, fan manufacturers often use the same connectors as the power cables for disk drives, allowing a fan to easily obtain the 12 volts it needs. Color-coded wires and industry standard connectors make it possible for the consumer to have many choices for a replacement power supply.

Advanced Power Management (APM) offers a set of five different states that your system can be in. It was developed by Microsoft and Intel for PC users who wish to conserve power. Each system component, including the operating system, basic input/output system (BIOS), motherboard and attached devices all need to be APM-compliant to be able to use this feature. Should you wish to disable APM because you suspect it is using up system resources or causing a conflict, the best way to do this is in the BIOS. That way, the operating system won't try to reinstall it, which could happen if it were disabled only in the software.

Power Supply Wattage

A 400-watt switching power supply will not necessarily use more power than a 250-watt supply. A larger supply may be needed if you use every available slot on the motherboard or every available drive bay in the personal computer case. It is not a good idea to have a 250-watt supply if you have 250 watts total in devices, since the supply should not be loaded to 100 percent of its capacity.

Power supplies of the same form factor ("form factor" refers to the actual shape of the motherboard) are typically differentiated by the wattage they supply and the length of the warranty.

Power Supply Problems

The PC power supply is probably the most failure-prone item in a personal computer. It heats and cools each time it is used and receives the first in-rush of AC current when the PC is switched on. Typically, a stalled cooling fan is a predictor of a power supply failure due to subsequent overheated components. All devices in a PC receive their DC power via the power supply.

A typical failure of a PC power supply is often noticed as a burning smell just before the computer shuts down. Another problem could be the failure of the vital cooling fan, which allows components in the power supply to overheat. Failure symptoms include random rebooting or failure in Windows for no apparent reason.

For any problems you suspect to be the fault of the power supply, use the documentation that came with your computer. If you have ever removed the case from your personal computer to add an adapter card or memory, you can change a power supply. If you've ever taken the case off of a computer, you've seen the one piece of equipment that ties everything together -- the motherboard. A motherboard allows all the parts of your computer to receive power and communicate with one another.

Motherboards have come a long way in the last twenty years. The first motherboards held very few actual components. The first IBM PC motherboard had only a processor and card slots. Users plugged components like floppy drive controllers and memory into the slots. Today, motherboards typically boast a wide variety of built-in features, and they directly affect a computer's capabilities and potential for upgrades.

In this article, we'll look at the general components of a motherboard. Then, we'll closely examine five points that dramatically affect what a computer can do.

Form Factor

A motherboard by itself is useless, but a computer has to have one to operate. The motherboard's main job is to hold the computer's microprocessor chip and let everything else connect to it. Everything that runs the computer or enhances its performance is either part of the motherboard or plugs into it via a slot or port.

The shape and layout of a motherboard is called the form factor. The form factor affects where individual components go and the shape of the computer's case. The form factor is just one of the many standards that apply to motherboards. Some of the other standards include:

The socket for the microprocessor determines what kind of Central Processing Unit (CPU) the motherboard uses.
The chipset is part of the motherboard's logic system and is usually made of two parts -- the northbridge and the southbridge. These two "bridges" connect the CPU to other parts of the computer.
The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) chip controls the most basic functions of the computer and performs a self-test every time you turn it on. Some systems feature dual BIOS, which provides a backup in case one fails or in case of error during updating.
The real time clock chip is a battery-operated chip that maintains basic settings and the system time.

The slots and ports found on a motherboard include:

Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)- connections for video, sound and video capture cards, as well as network cards
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) - dedicated port for video cards.
Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) - interfaces for the hard drives
Universal Serial Bus or FireWire - external peripherals
Memory slots

Some motherboards also incorporate newer technological advances:

Redundant Array of Independent Discs (RAID) controllers allow the computer to recognize multiple drives as one drive.
PCI Express is a newer protocol that acts more like a network than a bus. It can eliminate the need for other ports, including the AGP port.
Rather than relying on plug-in cards, some motherboards have on-board sound, networking,video or other peripheral support.

A Socket 754 motherboard

Many people think of the CPU as one of the most important parts of a computer. We'll look at how it affects the rest of the computer in the next section.

Sockets and CPUs

The CPU is the first thing that comes to mind when many people think about a computer's speed and performance. The faster the processor, the faster the computer can think. In the early days of PC computers, all processors had the same set of pins that would connect the CPU to the motherboard, called the Pin Grid Array (PGA). These pins fit into a socket layout called Socket 7. This meant that any processor would fit into any motherboard.

A Socket 939 motherboard

Today, however, CPU manufacturers Intel and AMD use a variety of PGAs, none of which fit into Socket 7. As microprocessors advance, they need more and more pins, both to handle new features and to provide more and more power to the chip.

Current socket arrangements are often named for the number of pins in the PGA. Commonly used sockets are:

Socket 478 - for older Pentium and Celeron processors
Socket 754 - for AMD Sempron and some AMD Athlon processors
Socket 939 - for newer and faster AMD Athlon processors
Socket AM2 - for the newest AMD Athlon processors
Socket A - for older AMD Athlon processors

A Socket LGA755 motherboard

The newest Intel CPU does not have a PGA. It has an LGA, also known as Socket T. LGA stands for Land Grid Array. An LGA is different from a PGA in that the pins are actually part of the socket, not the CPU.

Anyone who already has a specific CPU in mind should select a motherboard based on that CPU. For example, if you want to use one of the new multi-core chips made by Intel or AMD, you will need to select a motherboard with the correct socket for those chips. CPUs simply will not fit into sockets that don't match their PGA.

The CPU communicates with other elements of the motherboard through a chipset

Chipsets

The chipset is the "glue" that connects the microprocessor to the rest of the motherboard and therefore to the rest of the computer. On a PC, it consists of two basic parts -- the northbridge and the southbridge. All of the various components of the computer communicate with the CPU through the chipset.

The northbridge and southbridge

The northbridge connects directly to the processor via the front side bus (FSB). A memory controller is located on the northbridge, which gives the CPU fast access to the memory. The northbridge also connects to the AGP or PCI Express bus and to the memory itself.

The southbridge is slower than the northbridge, and information from the CPU has to go through the northbridge before reaching the southbridge. Other busses connect the southbridge to the PCI bus, theUSB ports and the IDE or SATA hard disk connections.

Chipset selection and CPU selection go hand in hand, because manufacturers optimize chipsets to work with specific CPUs. The chipset is an integrated part of the motherboard, so it cannot be removed or upgraded. This means that not only must the motherboard's socket fit the CPU, the motherboard's chipset must work optimally with the CPU.

Bus Speed

A bus is simply a circuit that connects one part of the motherboard to another. The more data a bus can handle at one time, the faster it allows information to travel. The speed of the bus, measured in megahertz (MHz), refers to how much data can move across the bus simultaneously.

Bus speed usually refers to the speed of the front side bus (FSB), which connects the CPU to the northbridge. FSB speeds can range from 66 MHz to over 800 MHz. Since the CPU reaches the memory controller though the northbridge, FSB speed can dramatically affect a computer's performance.

Here are some of the other busses found on a motherboard:

The back side bus connects the CPU with the level 2 (L2) cache, also known as secondary or external cache. The processor determines the speed of the back side bus.
The memory bus connects the northbridge to the memory.
The IDE or ATA bus connects the southbridge to the disk drives.
The AGP bus connects the video card to the memory and the CPU. The speed of the AGP bus is usually 66 MHz.
The PCI bus connects PCI slots to the southbridge. On most systems, the speed of the PCI bus is 33 MHz. Also compatible with PCI is PCI Express, which is much faster than PCI but is still compatible with current software and operating systems. PCI Express is likely to replace both PCI and AGP busses.

The faster a computer's bus speed, the faster it will operate -- to a point. A fast bus speed cannot make up for a slow processor or chipset.

Memory and Other Features

We've established that the speed of the processor itself controls how quickly a computer thinks. The speed of the chipset and busses controls how quickly it can communicate with other parts of the computer. The speed of the RAM connection directly controls how fast the computer can access instructions and data, and therefore has a big effect on system performance. A fast processor with slow RAM is going nowhere.

The amount of memory available also controls how much data the computer can have readily available. RAM makes up the bulk of a computer's memory. The general rule of thumb is the more RAM the computer has, the better.

184-pin DDR DIMM RAM

Much of the memory available today is dual data rate (DDR) memory. This means that the memory can transmit data twice per cycle instead of once, which makes the memory faster. Also, most motherboards have space for multiple memory chips, and on newer motherboards, they often connect to the northbridge via a dual bus instead of a single bus. This further reduces the amount of time it takes for the processor to get information from the memory.

200-pin DDR SODIMM RAM

A motherboard's memory slots directly affect what kind and how much memory is supported. Just like other components, the memory plugs into the slot via a series of pins. The memory module must have the right number of pins to fit into the slot on the motherboard.

In the earliest days of motherboards, virtually everything other than the processor came on a card that plugged into the board. Now, motherboards feature a variety of onboard accessories such as LANsupport, video, sound support and RAID controllers.

Motherboards with all the bells and whistles are convenient and simple to install. There are motherboards that have everything you need to create a complete computer -- all you do is stick the motherboard in a case and add a hard disk, a CD drive and a power supply. You have a completely operational computer on a single board.

For many average users, these built-in features provide ample support for video and sound. For avid gamers and people who do high-intensity graphic or computer-aided design (CAD) work, however, separate video cards provide much better performance.

Keunggulan dan Kelemahan Windows 7

Windows 7 versi beta (uji coba) telah terilis dan dikabarkan akhir tahun ini atau awal tahun 2010 versi finalnya akan muncul.
Sebenarnya, Windows 7 merupakan anak turunannya dari Windows Vista. Dimana tidak terlalu mencolok perubahannya.
Sedangkan kalo perubahan dari Windows 2000 ke XP, maupun XP ke Windows Vista, terjadi perubahan total.

Dan yang menjadi pertanyaan disini, apa sih keunggulan dan kelemahan windows 7 yang merupakan produk sistem operasi dari microsoft itu dari versi-versi windows sebelumnya??

Kelebihan :

1. proses boot/shut down lebih cepat
2. konsumsi daya CPU, hard disk (HD) dan memori yang dibutuhkan system service lebih
sedikit
3. Mengoptimisasi prefetching baik untuk HD maupun SSD
4. Tampilan Lebih bagus dari segi 3 demensinya yang menonjol
5. Fitur sekurity yang benar-benar ketat

Kelemahan / Kekurangan :

1. Beberapa aplikasi belum bisa beroperasi di Windows 7
2. Bug pada Windows Player 12
3. Ada hardware yang bisa langsung dikenali di Vista, tapi tidak di Windows 7
4. Susah memaksa software yang sebelumnya bisa dipaksakan diinstall di Vista,
juga dipasang di Windows 7

Namun karena yang muncul sekarang masih merupakan versi uji coba, sehingga masih terdapat banyak kekurangan.
”Tampilannya mendekati Windows Vista dan terlihat lebih hidup. Tetapi untuk secara keseluruhan memang belum bisa dinilai, karena versi finalnya belum keluar.

1. Tidak Sarapan Pagi
Mereka yang tidak mengkonsumsi sarapan pagi memiliki kadar gula darah yang rendah, yang akibatnya suplai nutrisi ke otak menjadi kurang.

2. Makan Terlalu Banyak
Terlalu banyak makan, apalagi yang kadar lemaknya tinggi, dapat berakibat mengerasnya pembuluh darah otak karena penimbunan lemak pada dinding dalam pembuluh darah. Akibatnya kemampuan kerja otak akan menurun.

3. Merokok
Zat dalam rokok yang terhisap akan mengakibatkan penyusutan otak secara cepat, serta dapat mengakibatkan penyakit Alzheimer.

4. Mengkonsumsi gula terlalu banyak
Konsumsi gula yang terlalu banyak akan menyebabkan terganggunya penyerapan protein dan nutrisi, sehingga terjadi ketidakseimbangan gizi yang akan mengganggu perkembangan otak

5. Polusi Udara
Otak adalah konsumen oksigen terbesar dalam tubuh manusia. Menghirup udara yang berpolusi menurunkan suplai oksigen ke otak sehingga dapat menurunkan efisiensi otak.

6. Kurang Tidur
Otak memerlukan tidur sebagai saat beristirahat dan memulihkan kemampuannya. Kekurangan tidur dalam jangka waktu lama akan mempercepat kerusakan sel-sel otak.

7. Menutup kepala saat tidur
Kebiasaan tidur dengan menutup kepala meningkatkan konsentrasi zat karbondioksida dan menurunkan konsentrasi oksigen yang dapat menimbulkan efek kerusakan pada otak.

8. Menggunakan pikiran saat sakit
Bekerja terlalu keras atau memaksakan untuk menggunakan pikiran kita saat sedang sakit dapat menyebabkan berkurangnya efektifitas otak serta dapat merusak otak.

9. Kurang menstimulasi pikiran
Berpikir adalah cara yang paling tepat untuk melatih otak kita. Kurangnya stimulasi pada otak dapat menyebabkan mengkerutnya otak kita.

10. Jarang berkomunikasi
Komunikasi diperlukan sebagai salah satu sarana memacu kemampuan kerja otak. Berkomunikasi secara intelektual dapat memicu efisiensi otak. Jarangnya berkomunikasi akan menyebabkan kemampuan intelektual otak jadi kurang terlatih.

Dalam waktu yang tidak begitu lama lagi Blackberry akan memasuki persaingan handset dengan layar sentuh yang sudah diramaikan oleh Apple iPhone, Samsung Instinct, LG Vu, HTC Diamond, dan beberapa merek lainnya. Blackberry Thunder 9500 yang menggunakan layer sentuh ini menurut rencana akan hadir pada kuartal ketiga tahun ini. Bahkan kemunculannya diramalkan oleh Wall Street Journal sebagai ancaman besar bagi Apple iPhone.

Yang menarik di balik berita ini adalah bocornya informasi mengenai Blackberry berlayar sentuh ini beberapa hari sebelum Apple iPhone 3G dirilis. Cuma 2 kalimat ampuh itu. Hari selanjutnya aku dikirim email yang intinya mengapa accountku didisable dan mengatakan kalo accountku diaktifkan lagi dan dikasih username dan passwordku.
Jadi kalau facebookmu didisable, tinggal kirim 2 kalimat itu tadi aja ke disabled@facebook.com dan mudah-mudahan facebook berbaik hati mau mengembalikan accountmu yang disabled tadi itu.

Menyusul dirilisnya sistem operasi terbaru Widows 7, Microsoft meluncurkan sejumlah perangkat hardware terbaru pendukungnya dalam bentuk keyboard, mouse, dan webcam. Peluncuran ini berlangsung bersamaan dengan dimulainya pameran IndoComtech 2009 yang digelar di Jakarta Convention Center, Rabu (4/11).

Dalam peluncuran Microsoft, Marketing Communications & Partnership Manager Ian Tan Kartono menyebutkan beberapa produk hardware terbarunya, di antaranya adalah Wireless Comfort 5000, Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000, LifeCam Cinema, dan Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000. Semuanya menunjang fitur-fitur baru dalam Windows 7.

Wireless Comfort Destkop 5000, jelas Tan, merupakan keyboard dan mouse combo dengan desain tombol comfort curve yang memberi kenyamanan bagi pengguna ketika mengetik. Adapun, tambahnya, keyboard ini dilengkapi dengan Taskbar Favourites untuk Windows 7 yang memudahkan pengguna mengakses program- program yang sedang dibuka dalam Windows Taskbar.

Untuk desain lebih stylis, kata Ian, Microsoft menawarkan Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 yang dilengkapi dengan Bluetooth wireless dan Portable Bluetooth Number Pad. "Keyboard ini lebih tipis dari telpon genggam dan sangat mudah dibawa ke mana saja," jelasnya.

Khusus produk mouse, Microsoft mengunggulkan Wireless Mouse 5000 dan Wireless Mouse 4000. Kelebihan kedua produk ini, ujarnya, dilengkapi dengan sistem BlueTrack Technology, sehingga mouse dapat digunakan di lapisan granit, marmer, karpet, dan kayu. Baterainya pun lebih hemat, tahan sekitar 8-10 bulan. Bedanya, "Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 terdiri dari berbagai warna yang disesuaikan dengan trend gadget sekarang," ujarnya.

Yang terakhir, sebutnya, Cinema LifeCam, webcam pertama dengan High Definition (HD) dengan sensor 720 HD, autofokus, dan noise-canceling microphone. Dalam acara, ia pun memperagakan hasil kinerja LifeCam yang terbukti sangat tajam, fokus, dan mampu bekerja dengan baik dalam segala kondisi pencahayaan di setiap resolusi. Kabar baik bagi Anda yang berkeinginan memiliki BlackBerry berbasis jaringan selain global system for mobile communication (GSM). Adalah PT Smart Telecom yang akhirnya meluncurkan BlackBerry berbasis jaringan code division multiple access (CDMA), sebagai alternatif penggunaan telepon genggam selain GSM, Senin (2/11). Tipe BlackBerry yang dipilih adalah Curve 8330.

Sebelumnya, BlackBerry berbasis GSM sudah diluncurkan empat operator telepon genggam lokal, yakni Indosat, XL, Telkomsel, dan Axis. "Kini masyarakat dapat menikmati layanan BlackBerry CDMA pertama di Indonesia," kata Tom Alamas Dinharsa, Head of Device Technology and Special Projects PT Smart Telecom, Senin (2/11).

Namun, meski Smart sempat berjanji bakal memberikan harga ekonomis dibandingkan operator BlackBerry GSM, mengingat posisinya sebagai operator CDMA, toh tarif yang dipatok Smart tak berbeda jauh. Paket langganan yang ditawarkan BlackBerry Smart berkisar Rp 140.000 sebulan dan Rp 5.000 untuk paket harian. Paket ini sudah termasuk internet tak terbatas selama 12 bulan.

Menurut Gregory Wade, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Research In Motion selaku produsen BlackBerry, BlackBerry Curve 8330 sebagai telepon seluler berbasis CDMA pertama di Indonesia dipilih lantaran tipe ini merupakan salah satu smartphone yang sangat populer di kalangan pelaku bisnis dan konsumen di seluruh dunia, termasuk Indonesia.

Ucapan ini tampaknya belum atau bahkan sama sekali tidak populer di negara kita. Tapi hampir semua orang tahu, Halloween adalah hari di mana semua orang (di Amerika tentunya) berdandan seram dan menghias rumah dengan berbagai macam hal seram. Salah satu benda yang selalu ditemui pada tanggal ini adalah adanya Jack O’Lantern, semacam hiasan yang dibentuk dari labu yang diisi dengan lilin atau lampu yang menyala. Labu tadi biasanya diukir dengan bentuk yang menyeramkan, sehingga pada saat malam tiba, Jack O’Lantern akan menyala dengan menyeramkan.

Selain Jack O’Lantern tadi, berbagai hiasan seram seperti kelelawar, tengkorak atau tulang belulang, sarang laba-laba, dan terkadang hiasan yang berbentuk seperti perlengkapan sihir seperti sapu terbang dan belanga tempat nenek sihir membuat berbagai obat atau racun sihir akan tampak di mana-mana. Bahkan tidak sedikit hiasan yang menampilkan Vampir atau peti mati ala Vampir nampak di berbagai rumah.

Sebenarnya apa sih yang terjadi sampai ada perayaan serba seram ini?

Seperti aja sejarah di balik perayaan unik ini?

Banyak teori yang berkembang mengenai Halloween ini, tapi teori yang paling banyak diterima adalah bahwa perayaan Halloween ini berasal dari perayaan bangsa Galia kuno yang disebut Samhain, yang secara kasar berarti “Akhir Musim Panas”. Perayaan ini dipercaya sebagai berakhirnya “masa terang” (musim semi dan musim panas) dan dimulainya “masa gelap” (musim gugur dan musim dingin). Bangsa Galia kuno percaya bahwa pada tanggal 31 Oktober, atau di hari Samhain tadi, batas antara dunia nyata dan dunia gaib akan sangat tipis, sehingga para penduduk dunia gaib dapat menyeberang ke alam kita.

Pada perayaan Samhain, biasanya pada penduduk Galia kuno akan mengadakan perayaan besar bagi nenek moyang mereka yang sudah lama meninggal dan “mengundang” mereka untuk duduk makan bersama, sedangkan arwah atau makhluk gaib yang jahat akan diusir dari kediaman mereka. Untuk semakin mempersulit arwah atau makhluk gaib jahat menyebarkan pengaruh negatif di tengah mereka, maka para penduduk akan menggunakan topeng dengan wajah buruk atau berdandan seperti makhluk gaib jahat tadi, sehingga para makhluk gaib jahat tadi menganggap bahwa mereka tidak seharusnya diganggu dan membiarkan perayaan berjalan dengan meriah.

Dari tradisi dan kepercayaan inilah tradisi mengenakan kostum berkembang sampai sekarang, walaupun Halloween di dunia modern sekarang, kostum yang ada bukan lagi kostum seram, tapi berbagai kostum unik mulai dari binatang sampai tokoh superhero atau bahkan tokoh kartun.

Kalau begitu, kenapa namanya berubah menjadi Halloween?

Ternyata nama Halloween ini berasal dari usaha Gereja pada masa itu untuk menghentikan penduduk merayakan hari perayaan Samhain yang dianggap bertentangan dengan perayaan Nasrani. Gereja mengadopsi perayaan Samhain menjadi Hari Para Orang Suci (All Hallows Evening), dengan harapan para penduduk Galia di masa itu akan meninggalkan perayaan yang dianggap tidak gerejawi.

Dari nama All Hallows Evening, penduduk menyingkatnya menjadi Hallow’s Even, dan makin lama nama yang ada makin pendek sehingga menjadi Halloween. Uniknya, walaupun nama dan perayaannya menjadi perayaan gerejawi, Gereja tetap tidak dapat mengubah bentuk dan tradisi yang ada di dalam perayaan ini.

Lalu apa sih sebenarnya Jack O’Lantern?

Jack O’Lantern ini merupakan legenda dari Irlandia. Legenda ini menceritakan mengenai seorang petani licik dan tangguh plus pelit yang berhasil menipu Iblis. Ia berhasil membuat iblis naik ke atas pohon dan kemudian mengukir bentuk Salib di batang pohon tadi, sehingga Iblis tidak bisa turun dengan mudah.

Pada saat kematiannya, Jack tidak diterima di Surga, karena kelicikan dan berbagai tindak buruk yang dia lakukan selama hidup, tapi Iblis juga menolak Jack untuk masuk Neraka karena marah pernah ditipu oleh Jack. Tapi akhirnya Iblis berbaik hati (atau makin jahat) dengan memberikan sebatang lilin untuk menemaninya berjalan-jalan dalam kegelapan, karena tidak dapat diterima di Surga ataupun Neraka. Lilin tadi ditempatkan di dalam Turnip (sebangsa lobak).

Pada imigran dari Irlandia datang ke Amerika sambil terus mempertahankan tradisi ini, sayangnya, di Amerika tidak banyak ditemukan Turnip, sehingga mereka akhirnya memilih sayuran lain yang ada, dan bisa menggantikan Turnip. Pilihan akhirnya jatuh ke labu (pumpkin) yang lebih banyak dan mudah ditemui di Amerika. Dari sini lah, Jack O’Lantern dari labu kemudian menjadi terkenal di seluruh dunia.

Pernah mendengar Trick or Treat?

Salah satu tradisi unik di Amerika untuk menyambut Halloween adalah Trick or Treat. Anak-anak akan berjalan dari rumah ke rumah dengan kostum unik sambil membawa keranjang, dan mengetuk pintu sambil meneriakkan “Trick or treaaaat”. Sebenarnya hal ini adalah ancaman, karena arti aslinya adalah, jika anda tidak memberikan “treat” alias makanan, kami akan melakukan “trick” atau kenakalan terhadap rumah tadi. Pemilik rumah akan keluar dan menghadiahkan berbagai makanan manis seperti coklat atau permen dalam keranjang mereka. Sebenarnya seperti apa sih tradisi awalnya?

1.Auto PC (1998 - 2001)

Melanjutkan kesuksesan dari segmen PC portabel, Microsoft membuat Auto PC yang awalnya berjanji untuk merevolusikan hiburan dalam mobil. Namun masalahnya saat Auto PC diluncurkan, mobil-mobil sudah dilengkapi dengan berbagai macam CD-player. Alat navigasi dalam mobil, pengenalan suara dan pemutar MP3 saat itu masih dianggap fiksi ilmiah (terutama mengingat harganya yang masih lebih dari empat digit saat itu).

2.Microsoft Bob (1995 - 1996)

Tanyakan kepada orang-orang apa yang mendefinisikan peta teknologi Microsoft pada era 90-an dan Anda akan mendapatkan "Cairo" sebagai jawaban. Diumumkan sebelum Windows NT 3.1 dirilis, Cairo terkadang dideskripsikan sebagai sebuah sistem operasi, terkadang sebagai sebuah koleksi beberapa teknologi baru yang dimaksudkan untuk membimbing Microsoft mencapai arsitektur yang lebih baik dari NT. Saya rasa yang ini sudah tidak perlu penjelasan lagi. Membutuhkan waktu pengembangan yang luar biasa, tetapi saat peluncurannya mengalami banyak sekali masalah dengan kompatibilitas browser, perangkat keras dan banyak lagi. Vista juga banyak dianggap oleh banyak perusahaan besar untuk tidak membawa banyak keuntungan selain tampilan dibandingkan Windows XP.

Chrystal Buckner memperkarakan mantan suaminya ke meja hijau setelah dirinya mengetahui anak-anaknya disuruh menonton film porno di internet oleh pria yang pernah mengisi hatinya tersebut. Wanita berusia 30 tahun itu tidak terima dua putrinya yang masih berusia di bawah sepuluh tahun harus melihat tayangan yang kurang pantas untuk seusia mereka. Namun, sebuah kenyataan pahit harus dia rasakan.

Belum masuk persidangan, pihak Kejaksaan Distrik Randall County telah menolak mendakwa ayah dari kedua putrinya tersebut. Argumentasi mengapa lembaganya melakukan hal itu karena adanya undang-undang tahun 1970 di negara Bagian Texas, Amerika Serikat. Demikian ujar James Farren, Kepala Kejaksaan Distrik County, yang kami kutip dari Kompas.com, Jumat 30 Oktober 2009.

Menurut Farren, dengan adanya UU tersebut maka baik ayah, ibu ataupun keduanya boleh mengajarkan anaknya mengenai pendidikan seks, sekalipun lewat tontonan film untuk kaum dewasa. Dan selama peraturan itu belum dicabut atau diubah, tambah Farren, pihaknya tidak dapat berbuat apa-apa.

Oleh karena itu, saat ini pihak Kejaksaan Distrik Randall County telah melayangkan permohonan revisi UU tahun 1970 kepada Kejaksaan Negara Bagian Texas sebagai lembaga yang berwenang melakukan perubahan di dalam peraturan tersebut.

Persoalan pendidikan seks sejak dini memang menjadi problematika tidak hanya di Amerika Serikat tetapi juga di Indonesia. - Jawaban - Partikel nano, yaitu partikel berukuran kurang dari 0,1 mikronmeter, bisa mengganggu kesehatan. Manifestasinya mulai dari infeksi paru-paru sampai kanker. Toksisitas partikel tergantung dari jumlah dan ukuran senyawa kimia, logam berat, atau kuman yang ada bersama partikel itu. Hal itu diungkapkan Ketua Departemen Kesehatan Lingkunga Fakultas Kesehatan Masyrakat Universitas Indonesia Budi Haryanto.

Menurut Budi, partikel berukuran 10 mikronmeter atau dikenal dengan istilah PM 10 hanya mencapai saluran pernapasan bagian atas. Partikel ini menyebabkan infeksi saluran pernapasan bagian atas, seperti batuk, pilek. Adapun partikel berukuran 2,5 mikronmeter (PM 2,5) sanggup mencapai paru-paru dan menyebabkan bronkitis, infeksi paru (pneumonia), penyakit paru obstruktif kronik (PPOK), dan kanker paru.

Yang paling berbahaya adalah partikel berukuran 0,1 mikronmeter ke bawah. Partikel ini mampu menembus dinding sel paru, kemudian ikut peredaran darah menuju organ target seperti otak, sistem saraf pusat, dan sebagainya. Partikel ini bisa ditumpangi senyawa kimia, seperti benzena atau logam berat, misalnya timbal serta kuman penyakit. Jika kuman penyakit langsung menyebabkan gangguan kesehatan, senyawa kimia dan logam berat bersifat akumulatif. Jika sudah mencapai jumlah tertentu, baru menimbulkan gangguan, seperti penurunan daya pikir maupun kanker," papar Budi.

Penelitian awal yang dilakukan Budi tahun 2005 menunjukkan, jumlah partikel nano dalam rumah tangga, tempat kerja, ruang kelas, kendaraan umum dan pribadi, dan jalanan di Jakarta cukup tinggi. Penelitian menggunakan alat yang dibawa subyek sepanjang hari untuk mengukur jumlah partikel nano yang dihirup subyek (anak dan orang dewasa).

Di rumah, zat berbahaya berasal dari sisa pembakaran, misalnya minyak tanah, kayu, batu bara, serta zat kimia, seperti insektisida. Di kantor, zat berbahaya antara lain partikel karbon dari tinta mesin fotokopi dan printer, zat kimia pembersih karpet, insektisida, asap rokok, serta bahan biologi, misalnya kuman, jamur yang terbawa pekerja dari luar. Sementara di luar ruangan, polusi berasal dari asap kendaraan dan pabrik, kebakaran hutan, dan aktivitas gunung berapi.

Bensin tanpa timbal, kata Budi, menggunakan senyawa aromatik. Hal ini mensyaratkan penggunaan catalytic converter di knalpot untuk menghambat 95% emisi gas buang. Namun, di Indonesia hal itu tak disosialisasikan. Padahal, partikel hasil pembakaran berupa benzena bisa menyebabkan kanker darah dan gangguan lain.

Dalam penelitian dalam British Medical Journal sangat jelas disebutkan, orang yang lingkar pahanya lebih dari 60 cm risiko terkena serangan jantungnya lebih kecil. Survei dilakukan terhadap 3.000 orang pria dan wanita. Selama 10 tahun riwayat kesehatan para responden ini dipantau. Mereka juga diukur tinggi badan, berat, ukuran paha, pinggang, dan pinggul untuk mengetahui persentasi lemak tubuhnya.

Hasilnya adalah mereka yang punya paha kecil (kurang dari 55 cm) punya risiko dua kali lebih besar mengalami kematian akibat masalah kesehatan serius.

"Naiknya risiko juga bergantung pada kegemukan, gaya hidup, dan faktor risiko penyakit kardiovaskular, seperti hipertensi. Tapi kami juga menemukan bahwa risikonya lebih tinggi pada orang yang pahanya kecil," kata ketua peneliti, Profesor Berit Heitmann, dari Copenhagen University Hospital.
